As we have been learning Jesus through Luke’s Gospel, Jesus passionately cares about those who society often forgets about or ignores. In Luke 4, as he begins his ministry, Jesus stands in the synagogue and reads this passage from Isaiah 61:1-2:
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
You have an opportunity to learn about many in the world who are captives and oppressed. This Tuesday, November 17, Becky Milligan, a member here at Rochester Church, and a group of students will be presenting to film At the End of Slavery in the Rochester College auditorium. The showing will begin at 7:00pm and the film lasts approximately half an hour. There will be food and drinks provided as well so you have time to visit and discuss the movie. Below is an excerpt from the website for the film, www.attheendofslavery.com:
Narrated by actor Danny Glover, At the End of Slavery: The Battle for Justice in our Time takes you inside the violent and ugly business of modern-day slavery — the buying and selling of human beings — from the brothels of the Philippines to the brick kilns of India.
Undercover footage and first-person testimony from former slaves and respected experts expose the enormity of the crime — but a remarkable strategy and the courage of today’s abolitionists offer hope for a final end to this brutal trade.
This would be a great opportunity for the whole family to learn about the ongoing issue of slavery in our world. Slavery is not just in history books, it’s happening all around our world.
One of the cornerstones of Jesus’ ministry was to proclaim liberty to the captives and to set at liberty those who are oppressed. This Tuesday, parents and students have an opportunity to learn about the brutal truth of modern-day slavery. In addition, you can become a part of a movement seeking to bring awareness to this situation and hopefully engage in taking steps to help those who Jesus would have served.
shine!
